Carnivorous & Venomous Plants
Capsule Collection
For this collection I was inspired by venomous and carnivorous plants and the effect they have on the body. I researched plants such as the Bitter Nightshade and Foxglove but ultimately my muses for the collection were the Cobra Lily and Giant Hogweed. The Cobra Lily is known for having a wrap around stem that lures prey into it. It is a deceiving plant with translucent patches on its hood that tricks its prey into thinking that it is exiting towards the outside light when really, it is on its way to the fluid that will break it down.

Giant Hogweed
The Giant Hogweed is known for causing blisters and scarring when one comes in contact with it and may even lead to fatality if one encounters too much exposure to the plant. I wanted to play with the concept of a misleading first impression. When one thinks of plants and greenery we often think of serenity and calmness. However, we overlook the fact that they can be dangerous and hidden in plain sight.
Development Process
Look One
I wanted to showcase the effects of burning that these plants have by depicting that throughout my looks and quite literally burning the fabric on some of my looks. I airbrushed the edges of the armhole openings, neck opening, and hem of dress to achieve this burned poisonous look.
For this look the wearer’s left side of the dress is burnt and peeled back to reveal a hoop skirt that acts symbolically as the skeleton of the prey.
Look Two
Look Three
I took inspiration from the shape of the stems and leaves from the plants to create the silhouettes of my garments.
